Phoenix, AZ (July 16, 2010) CUT IT OUT has been hailed from coast-to-coast as an innovative solution to a chronic and difficult problem: raising awareness on the epidemic of domestic abuse and helping victims receive the resources they need. Entering its eighth year along with long-time initiative partner, Southern Living at HOME, and the Professional Beauty Association | National Cosmetology Association (PBA | NCA), the CUT IT OUT 2010 Campaign will kick-off at Beauty Week, July 17 – 20, 2010. At the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), PBA Symposium and throughout Beauty Week, attendees can learn more about CUT IT OUT and join the CUT IT OUT 2010 Campaign by pledging to use the power of beauty to end domestic abuse in America by having CUT IT OUT materials available at their front desk, individual stations and bathrooms. The CUT IT OUT 2010 Campaign is that simple – sign the pledge, display the CUT IT OUT materials and help someone who may be suffering in silence.
CUT IT OUT is a program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund dedicated to mobilizing salon professionals and others to fight the epidemic of domestic abuse in communities across the United States. CUT IT OUT builds awareness of domestic abuse and trains salon professionals to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources. Salon professionals have a unique and trusting relationship with their clients. The intimate work of a salon professional creates situations in which many telltale signs of domestic abuse can be identified.
Originally a statewide program in Alabama, CUT IT OUT trained over 500 Alabama salon professionals in 2002. During this time, NCA and Clairol Professional had separately identified domestic abuse as an area in which both could make a difference. The three organizations, with the support of Southern Living at HOME, formed a partnership to take CUT IT OUT national in March 2003.
CUT IT OUT 2010 will challenge the professional beauty industry to take a stand against domestic violence, and ask that 2,010 salons and/or individual beauty professionals make a pledge to use the power of beauty to end domestic abuse in America by displaying CUT IT OUT awareness materials at their front desk, individual stations and bathrooms.
CUT IT OUT 2010 will also challenge beauty industry media to help combat domestic violence by coordinating an industry-wide media day. To kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month, CUT IT OUT 2010 asks that all core industry media and industry mailing lists create an orchestrated media push of articles and email blasts dedicated to raising awareness of domestic violence and the CUT IT OUT program on October 4, 2010 – The Day of Unity. Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the first Day of Unity observed in October 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The Day of Unity is celebrated nationally on the first Monday in October.
