(New York, NY, November 2006) — The First Annual HBA Regulatory Summit attracted more than 100 attendees to its debut event on September 13th during the 14th Annual HBA Global Expo. This unprecedented full-day conference featured a panel of 17 international cosmetic industry experts including toxicologists, regulatory and consumer attorneys, and high level industry executives. They offered unique insight into various legislative actions and the impact on the emerging global regulations in the cosmetic and personal care industry.
“The HBA Regulatory Summit was well received by everyone who attended and participated. It provided an exciting educational platform for all attendees to understand the forces behind the regulatory revolution that is now taking place and keen insight into the emerging global requirements,” said Jack Gonzalez, Group Show Director of HBA Global Expo.
Kicking off the summit was a Keynote Address by Dr. Bruce N. Ames, Professor of the Graduate School in Molecular and Cell Biology, University of California at Berkeley. He spoke about our “chemo-phobic” society and our misplaced concern for what is really harming our bodies. He also discussed his research regarding the lack of proper nutrients for children from poor neighborhoods and the exploration of enhancing wellness and beauty by using topical, as well as internal means for profound effects.
Other speakers included Elizabeth Anderson, Executive Vice President, Legal and General Counsel, and John Bailey, Executive Vice President, Science, at The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA), describing the association’s consumer commitment code and the importance of communication within the industry to make self-regulation work. George Kimbrell, Esq., International Center for Technology Assessment, spoke about nanomaterials in personal care products and FDA regulations and other panelists discussed the European Union’s REACH legislation, shifting definitions of cosmetic ingredient safety and how cosmetic companies are responding to it, and the growing trend in new natural ingredients and how to assure their safety and stability.
The Summit, professionally moderated by Meyer R. Rosen, President of Interactive Consulting and Rebecca James Gadberry, President and Chairman of the Board for YG Laboratories, concluded with a spirited one-hour interactive session during which anonymous questions covering hot topics were submitted by attendees and discussed and debated by the panelists.
In November, the Summit will be available as a Webinar through the HBA website at www.hbaexpo.comsummit
“HBA is committed to making the Regulatory Summit an integral part of its educational program. In addition to the Webinar, plans are underway to provide year-round resources and information to the beauty and personal care industry,’ said Mr. Rosen. “Regulation will continue to be a hot-button for the industry, and we will keep the dialogue and communication flowing.”
