For thousands of years, mankind has been searching for a cure for hair loss.
Ancient Egyptians recited a magical spell to the sun god Ra for baldness. In
ancient Greece, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, recommended coating
the scalp with a blend of horseradish, cumin, nettles and pigeon droppings.
Throughout history, mankind has concocted plenty of outlandish remedies for
baldness and created many myths and superstitions surrounding the mystery of
hair loss. Today, science has replaced these questionable concoctions with
clinical treatments, professional products and medical prescriptions. Mike
Vidal, CEO of Divi International, has now introduced the patented new HairCheck
measurement system, which is the first tool to actually gauge hair thinning,
hair breakage and hair re-growth. Now, salon, spa, and hair replacement
professionals have a clinical way to gauge their clients’ level of hair loss 10
to 15 years before it becomes visible to the naked eye.
Before science took over the treatment of hair loss though, mankind came up with
some pretty creative solutions for baldness. Cleopatra recommended burnt mice,
ground horse teeth, bear grease, deer marrow and reed bark mixed with honey.
She used this concoction on Julius Caesar, but it obviously did not succeed, as
Caesar is famous for his comb-over as well as frequently wearing laurel wreaths!
The 19th century was a
prime time for the hair loss industry with ‘snake oil’ salesmen in abundance.
There were many topical cures available, mainly containing alcohol and water.
With the Industrial Age came questionable technological advances with equipment
providing electric shock, vacuum suction and vibration.
There are still plenty of modern day hair loss myths around, some based in
history or in a sliver of fact. For instance, Hippocrates noted that baldness
did not occur in men castrated before puberty. This is because the male hormone
testosterone, produced at puberty, is later converted into dihydrotestosterone
or DHT, the active element in baldness. This led to the myth that high
levels of testosterone resulted in baldness. Yet if this were the case,
all body hair would also be lost due to testosterone levels. It is also still
commonly believed that the genes for baldness come from the mother’s side of the
family. Yet genetics work in a random manner, shuffling your family traits
like a hand of cards. You may get traits from either side of your family
tree or much farther back than your own parents, as genes can skip generations.
Thus, you cannot determine if you will go bald based simply on your family
history.
Other modern day myths include brushing your hair 100 strokes a day, trimming
your hair or massaging the scalp for increased growth, or that wearing hats,
overstyling the hair or over exposure to the sun will cause hair loss. The
real facts about hair loss are simply that when testosterone interacts with the
enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, DHT is created in the scalp. Hair follicles are
then altered by DHT, decreasing the volume of hair strands. Baldness is
therefore not caused by hair falling out, but by hair gradually being replaced
by finer, thinner hair, called ‘miniaturization.’ The average head of hair
contains approximately 100,000 strands of hair and will shed about 50 to 60
hairs per day. Hair generally grows at about one half inch per month.
There are many environmental factors that will affect hair growth rates
including medicines, diet, autoimmune disorders and stress.
Do you think the wildest hair loss myth is something like eating fish oil Jell-O
or cutting your hair under a full moon? No, the wildest myth is simply
that there is nothing that can be done about hair loss. Thanks to
scientific and cosmetic advances, there are now many options for those suffering
from hair loss or baldness. Prescription medications, hair transplant
surgery and laser hair treatments are very effective solutions. There are also
many professional salon haircare products for hair loss including hair
extensions, wigs, hair pieces and haircare products for enhanced volume and
body, which also reduce hair breakage. However, hair loss treatments are rarely
suggested to clients until the hair is visibly thinner. By that time, as
much as 50% of the hair in the thinning areas is already gone. By acting
preemptively, clients can delay or prevent balding years ahead of time.
Doing the “Hair Math” and monitoring hair loss is the first step toward taking
action. Devices that generate quantitative data for hair loss and growth
have not been available previously, so evaluating hair loss has been largely
limited to observation. The HairCheck device accurately measures the density of
hair in a two-by-two centimeter area. Beauty professionals can now offer
this valuable new service while boosting revenue. Vidal notes, “We are now able
to give quantifiable results versus visual results for hair loss and breakage.
If you were on a diet, you wouldn’t be able to accurately measure how much
weight you’d lost if you didn’t have a scale! We are the scale to measure
hair loss. If you cannot measure hair loss, then you cannot monitor it.”
