Spa Velia to Provide Chair Massages for Breast Cancer Survivors at The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, 11/07/2010 in Balboa Park
San Diego, CA – The wellness experts from San Diego’s Spa Velia will donate the time and talent of their massage therapists to the 11th Anniversary San Diego Race for the Cure, sponsored by the San Diego affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, in Balboa Park on Sunday, November 7st. Spa Velia will be in the Survivors’ Tent starting at 6:30 am on race day, and will remain there throughout the entire event, providing chair massages to survivors until approximately 1:00 pm. This will be Spa Velia’s 5th year participating and coincides with their 5th anniversary of the opening of their business!
Danielle Fielder, longtime Spa Velia Massage Therapist, reflects about her past years’ experience stating, “I am genuinely honored to massage the survivors. Their determination to not let anything hold them back is humbling and awe-inspiring! “
We care deeply about women’s health, and by volunteering to be involved, we have an opportunity to show our care and support for breast cancer survivors in a way that is hopefully relaxing and beneficial for them”, Dana Stallings, Spa Velia Principal. “I look forward to being a part of this event each year simply because it is an honor to be involved with such courageous and caring people. The love and energy you feel in the air is simply overwhelming. Seeing the turnout of all the supporters, survivors, families and friends makes it a very emotionally charged day!” says Principal Jody Rogers. Their partner, Chris Guimond, agrees “Each year, we feel it is imperative to donate our time and energy to such an amazing cause, one that focuses on the CURE and not the problem. The energy of gratitude and appreciation for life shines through everybody at the event and it is such a beautiful thing to be a part of!”
About Susan G. Komen
Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer with her heart, body and soul. Throughout her diagnosis, treatments, and endless days in the hospital, she spent her time thinking of ways to make life better for other women battling breast cancer instead of worrying about her own situation. Moved by Susan’s compassion for others and commitment to making a difference, Nancy G. Brinker promised her sister that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer.
Though Susan lost her battle with the disease, her legacy lives on through the work of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the organization Nancy started in her honor. Komen for the Cure is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since its inception in 1982. Komen’s promise is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
Across the country, that promise is upheld by a network of 122 local Affiliate offices. At the heart of each Affiliate is a person or group of people who, like Susan, wanted to make a difference.
In San Diego Since 1995
In 1995, a group of passionate, committed health educators and breast cancer survivors did more than just imagine. They acted by founding the San Diego Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Since its inception in 1995, Komen for the Cure San Diego has awarded grants totaling more than $8 million dollars to local organizations that have made valuable contributions to breast cancer diagnostics, treatment, education, screening and patient support.
Each year, 75 percent of our proceeds are awarded through a grant process to local organizations. Each grantee conducts a program that offers breast cancer education, screening or treatment to residents in the San Diego area. The remaining 25 percent is directed to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Grant Program to fund research on a national and international level. Since the Affiliate’s inception in 1995, nearly $7 million has been given to local organizations that provide breast cancer education, screening, diagnostics, treatment and patient support for the uninsured or underinsured in San Diego County.
