The Foundation Starts with Establishing Culture and Understanding Leadership Styles
Phoenix, AZ (April 24, 2008) – In order to keep up with the competition, businesses are forced to constantly reinvent and evolve their brand, so what salon and spa owner wouldn’t want some help to improve their business culture or strengthen their leadership skills?The Professional Beauty Association (PBA) understands these needs and hosted an intimate, two-day seminar on April 20-21, 2008, to address them. Through its Center for Business Education (CBE), new and veteran salon/spa owners listened to successful salon owners, Matthew Fairfax of James Alan Salon and Jeanne Lennon of Lennonheads Salon, as they discussed innovative methods for building a business based on culture, leading with goals and action plans, motivating staff to be more passionate about their work and more!
This advanced-education seminar:
provided real-world solutions that could easily be applied to any business;
fostered intensive attendee involvement in presentations by industry leaders;
offered intimate round-table sessions for productive interaction and idea sharing.
Fairfax kicked off the seminar with group exercises to see what happens when individuals work together and identify their leadership styles. Fairfax used the results to highlight the stages of how teams form, how to effectively communicate to each staff member and how to create and sustain an effective culture in the workplace.
Fairfax explained, “Once I know someone’s style, I can do something with it – I can manage them. This is why I teach this class, so owners can understand how to manage each staff member to their fullest potential. Eventually you build a bank of trust and respect with them, perpetuating the success of your business.”
Later, Lennon introduced tactics business owners can implement when faced with confrontation in the workplace. While these are gut wrenching, stomach twisting issues many owners cringe at the mere thought of, many don’t know how to handle confrontation. “One of my greatest achievements as a business owner is to stop and pay attention to my people,” stated Lennon. “Your trust increases as your staff’s trust increases and the hope and vision come back, but it’s a time consuming, day-to-day practice.”
Overall, the seminar proved to be a definite success. Attendees left feeling inspired, motivated and eager to utilize the tools they were provided. One attendee stated, “I’m so excited to get back to work and share these techniques with my staff while they’re fresh in my mind. This was exactly what I needed to reinvigorate myself and my team.”
“We are continually building new tools and forums to bring the industry together,” says Steve Sleeper, Executive Director of PBA. “As our members highly value networking, these seminarsbuild a sense of community within the industry while offering a relaxed way to connect and learn from others.”
