Your Snowman Needs Sunscreen Too!
In Wintertime, Full Spectrum Sun Protection is Just as Important as in Summer for Skin Cancer Prevention
Northridge, CA Sunscreen is still vital in the wintertime for skin cancer prevention, especially if there is snow on the ground. The sun reflects 80% more off of the snow’s surface, making it just as intense as being on the water in the summertime! Skin cancer prevention is a year round habit and it’s not only in the summertime that we need to be practicing it. If you forget to apply sunscreen in the winter – your skin won’t forget. Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers – melanoma represents 4% of the skin cancers in the U.S. but accounts for 75% of skin cancer deaths. In 1935, the risk of melanoma in Americans was 1 in 1,500. Today it is 1 in 71. Add to that the fact that 70% of adults in the U.S. do not use any sun protection any time of year and the danger is clear.
Long winter days spent skiing on sunny slopes are an obvious hazard, but the fact is that skin cancer can occur even when we are not spending extensive time outdoors. Sun exposure adds up day after day and happens whenever you are outside – driving, hiking, biking, golfing, gardening or attending a sporting event. Skin cancer can affect anyone at any age. Most common are fair skinned patients who are out in the sun a lot, particularly those with Northern European ancestry, yet even African American people are victims of skin cancer. Skin cancer prevention is becoming more of an issue as baby boomers age. Boomers are living longer and enjoying more active lifestyles. However, doctors are now seeing more cases among teens and adults in their twenties and thirties. In 2005, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the skin cancer rate in people under age 40 was indeed increasing. Doctors do not know the exact reason for the increasing rates, nor in fact what causes skin cancer, although sun exposure is the main factor involved.
The Mikuni Corporation is including sunscreen education in their Sun Awareness Program, developed along with professional golf instructor David Leadbetter to help educate consumers on skin cancer prevention. They’ve developed a new sunscreen product line using the newest technology in sun protection. This sunscreen is all natural, using a new micro-pearl barrier technology. The micro-pearls, technically microscopic silicate molecules, actually contain the common UV-blocking chemical OMC, or octyl methoxycinnamate. However, as they lay on the surface of the skin and never break open to expose the chemical into the body’s system, there is no danger from the skin’s absorbing it. The molecules are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye and cannot be felt on the skin. They stay on the surface of the skin for up to 24 hours unless they are washed off. The sunscreen also uses a pharmaceutical-grade titanium dioxide for superior physical blockage and Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Rutin microcapsules. These vitamins easily break open when rubbed into the skin for healthy antioxidant benefits, providing over 98% of their full potency with each use.
Mikuni also manufactures Revenir, a Vitamin C Skincare System utilizing electrolysis for superior antioxidant delivery. Vitamin C antioxidants are the latest innovation in preventative measures against the free radical damage that causes premature aging and may also lead to skin cancer. Clinical studies show that antioxidants reaching the dermal layer of skin are able to neutralize free radical damage and give skin six times the protection against UV rays than its natural melanin alone. This makes it effective even after sun exposure has occurred, although of course preventative measures such as wearing sunscreen, wide brim hats, sunglasses, long pants and sleeves are always recommended. The American Cancer Society also recommends avoiding sun exposure between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM, when the sun is at its strongest. When used in combination, the new sunscreen technology and electrolyzed skincare systems promise to greatly increase protection against skin cancer.
